I will now talk about the English education here in Japan. I can't compare this to other country's English education, so I will solely talk about Japan's :3

There are two different worlds, as we all have: Rural and City.

In the rural area, where I live, don't have a lot of opportunity to see and speak with foreigners. In the city, such as Osaka and Tokyo, they have numerous amount of English speakers, therefore there is a LOT of opportunities to fullfill their English need haha.

I did go to Tokyo (and not like it, will talk later about it...) and I am truely amazed how much Japanese is used (o_o Entering McDonald's, a lady spoke English. Signs are all written in English as well as instructions. Songs in English. Even if the Japanese don't speak English, they would just say "hello," "thank you," and "welcome." No wonder visitors were so thrilled to happen to understand Japanese language...

In the rural area. there is hardly English at all. 99% is Japanese. The rest you can find it at the local library and city hall (usually). You will unexpectedly hear someone speak broken English with you, the rest just like to flatten you with Japanese in natural speed (making you stressed out with the difficulties in language barriers). Thus...English is not the norm outside of metropolitan cities.

Now students studying English in school, it's not to help for the future. It's only for passing the entrance exam to junior high and/or high school (I say "or" because entrance exam to jr high is for entering private junior high school). No one even cares about the future, the same we all had back in junior high (except...me...oh big dreamer me orz...) In junior high, they copy sentences from the book, they read sentences from the textbook, and they hardly speak a word or two. No extra materials were given such as reading materials. This is actually considered "waste of time" to teachers here. The reading sections in the textbooks were horrible. 99% of them are focused in Japan and on Japanese people. For example, the main character is a Japanese. She visits her relatives in the U.S. whom are Japanese. She meets a foreigner in school who whines about why Japanese people ask her the same question about her chopsticks technique. Yeah, really seriously. I kinda laughed about it c_c; She only whines in the story, and they made her a blond character. Not a good image I dare say x_X; Also, the Japanese character travels to U.K. because of Harry Potter XDD like "We went to King's Cross Station. I really wanted to visit it because Harry started off from there." OTL... Other types of reading materials were true story, like a Japanese volunteer, a Japanese child died of sickness, a vacation in Kyoto, the Sound of Music (nice, nice)...but the rest were all about Japan and Japanese. When we learn French, we learn about France and focus on France, right? When ESL students learn about English, we learn about the world, right? BUT here it is all about Japan...Japan, Japan, Japan...they really love their country a lot x_x;

In elementary school, they are not supposed to read simple words and write alphabets........................................only talking and singing and being silly......................WHAT?

Part 2 is coming, will write more later! <3

I feel like you've been in Japan too long. Your English sentence structures are turning Japanese!
